noob VHF questions from a nooooob boater!?

So the VHF on my boat seems to work ok for channel 3 and 4 - getting weather and sea condition reports.

Channel 16 has a lot of static and no chatter. This may be normal because its an emergency channel. But is that much static normal?

My VHF radio seems to skip certain numbers? What is that?

What is difference between the H / L and WX frequencies?

What is the SOL. button for? I turn it clockwise, and it seems to silence everything. I figure it was squelch control but it just like turning off the volume.

Answer:

WX is a weather frequency.

H / L probably selects between high power and lower power during transmit.

The Sql is squelch. It mutes the speaker if the received signal is weaker than the setting. Turn it low to hear everything; turn it high to hear only the strongest signals. Signal strength mostly correlates to how close the transmitters are, but is also affected by their type of antenna, mountains, large buildings, and slightly by rain.

Some channels are skipped since they are not for public use. Technically channel 3 is like that. Also zero, 9, 21-23, 29-60, 64, etc.
