Frequently Asked Questions...

A few music orientated questions.?

I got a 1960 King Cleveland Sax about 6 months ago, and I just got everything working on it to play. My question are does anyone know of a good wayto learn? A really good DVD or book maybe? Lessons are rare and expensive where I live.....Second thing, does anyone know of a good way to learn how to read sheet music? I've tried looking and memorizing, but I just can't do it! And finally, are there any small care tips? I know I should get a neck saver, and get a pull-trough and use it after ever play, plus the cork grease, but is there anything else I sould be doing? Thnaks for the help!
Oh, almost forgot, I was going to ask if anyone knew the value of my sax aswell. It's in fairly good condition, but it was a small dent in the bell, and a smaller one on the back side, near where the neck and bell join.

Answer:

There are many interactive computer programs that are helpful in learning to read music. It may not be what you want to hear but learning to play a wind instrument like saxophone really requires a private teacher or band director. You can try to learn on your own but there will be no one to recognize bad habits that may be forming. Just to get you started, I would recommend buying a beginning band book such as Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements to help guide you. The saxophone embouchure is like a drawstring bag with even support on all sides. The mouthpiece sits on top of the bottom lip which is over the bottom teeth. The top of the mouthpiece however, is anchored on the top teeth. The enemy of all wind playing is tension so stay as relaxed as possible. Also, sax players are very tempted to tilt their head sideways. This restricts airflow. Make sure you are sitting up straight and bring the instrument to you, not the opposite way around. Also make sure you are starting notes with the tongue. The tip of the tongue should basically "release" the reed to vibrate. This might help to at least get you started but you really need to find a teacher. Hope this helps.
