Workstation Synthesizer

Synths have internal sound modules that produce sounds to be heard through a speaker. MIDI controllers are pads and keyboards (and even guitars) that are assigned to trigger sounds, effects, and loops through your software of choice -- they do not have sound modules and cannot function alone.

Workstations sort of combine the two, with sound modules as well as sequencers that can be triggered, "effected," and played, all via the same interface. A lot of newer, better, more expensive workstations have not only vast on-board effects processors, but hard-drives, expansion kits, multi-samples, and a display.

Finding a good workstation for under a grand is not easy, unless you go used, or get financing. The Korg Triton TR61 61 Key Keyboard can be had for less than a grand.
