How to troubleshoot and repair fuzzy output on an 80's style Realistic stereo reciever?

I can get the specific model number and year if needed, (Lets just say its old enough that it has the screws in the back for speaker wires and such, and the electric coord has a metal piece that is screwed into the back of the reciever.

But the radio turns on and works fine but the sound output from the stereo is always fuzzy, Its like you cant seem to get the station to come in correctly.. The tuning meter which goes up to 10 will only make it to a 2 at the best, which is a very fuzzy sound..
I have a 5 foot very thin gauged piece of wire hooked up to both the fm antenna screws and the ground speaker screws/ You can understand the sound and words, but its very annoying.

The reciever has been sitting in a smoky house for years, and i just recently purchased it. Any advice would be appreciated very much.

Answer:

It may just be old and worn out. Components start to go bad over time, and the amplifier components may just be injecting a lot of noise in the signal due to age.

Try taking the cover off and blowing out any dust that may have accumulated. Dust is a very good insulator, and the components give off heat. Some of that heat gets trapped because of the dust and causes the components to overheat.

If that doesn't work, you can also take it in to get it repaired, but the cost may be more than what it is worth.
