Hallet Davis Piano - Scale Design

Frequently Asked Questions...

Should I buy a small grand piano?

I've noticed that the small grands 5'1-5'3" & especially babys & of course the really big 6' ones, aren't sold very fast in my city (postings for over 1 month & they keep lowering their prices). But the uprights (especially Yamaha) are sold within a week of posting. The grands are usually obscure names like Hallet & Davis or Kohler & whatever. But then there'll be a yamaha gh1 which people have said isn't very good or a kawai 5'1". Basically, I need a grand piano that's very sellable, because I know I will have to sell it later (I want a bigger size but can't right now). You know that sitch when you lower the price by $1000 & STILL no one buys it?? :-0 Would buying a good model be good enough? or should I just stay away from small grands?
If I buy a 5'6" or bigger, I don't plan to sell it cuz it's my ideal size. But I would also have to move to a bigger place.

I just want to know if I should try to buy a 5'3" or smaller (can't go with anything bigger) as of now.

Answer:

Small baby grands (under 5' 5") are generally a real compromise instrument. They are made more for the "prestige" of having a grand piano in your home than they are as being a high quality instrument. I don't know who currently makes (if anyone) the Kohler & Campbell, I is used to be a Korean import, IIRC Samik.

The Hallett & Davis name is made by American Sojin in an absolutely huge factory in China. The H & D designs are unique to the name, it is not a copy of other names coming from the factory (as far as I know) They are nice pianos, but built to a price-point. The basic scale design is from H & D, at least back from when they were a stencil name of the Aeolian corp. if not from when the company was independent. It's obviously be updated to use modern manufacturing techniques, especially the action. (That's a good thing.) the 5'5" and 6'1" are nice instruments for the price, but you can do betters.

The small Kawais GE10, GM12 and that size are easily outclassed by their professional uprights. An RX1, RX2 or RX3 (5' 5", 5' 10", and 6' 1") are very nice home grand pianos however.

... for every situation, you should see and play the piano you are even moderately interested in.
